VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is assembling BEACONSAT, the nation’s debut military satellite and its most substantial spacecraft built domestically to date. This satellite will monitor and interpret interference impacting global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo. The Austrian government plans to send BEACONSAT into orbit in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle. The initiative aims to identify jamming and spoofing signals from space and to collect data regarding the timing and location of navigation system disruptions.

As a technological proof-of-concept within a multi-year R&D effort, BEACONSAT will demonstrate capabilities to detect radio interference that blocks or reduces satellite navigation signals, known as jamming. Spoofing, which involves transmitting false navigation data to mislead receivers, is also a focus. Satellite navigation plays a vital role in supporting aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency responders, and numerous other systems. Austria’s Defence Ministry anticipates that the data generated by this mission will enhance operational insights and expand its understanding of GNSS interference.
Leading the BEACONSAT project is Schwechat-based GATE Space, a space technology firm responsible for overseeing the mission. Established in 2022 as a TU Wien spin-off, the company specializes in chemical propulsion systems enabling satellites to maneuver in orbit. GATE Space supplies the propulsion units, satellite structure, and thermal regulation systems for BEACONSAT. Over the years, the company has conducted more than 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport, in both atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core Austrian technological components power the satellite initiative
Key systems for Austria’s first military satellite are provided by other European firms. Graz-based IGASPIN offers advanced technology capable of precisely detecting and analyzing GNSS interference. Denmark’s Space Inventor supplies additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice with approximately 750,000 euros in funding.
The European Space Agency provides support and co-finances the effort through its ESA Marketplace initiative designed for technology demonstrations. This program enables commercially available space technologies to undergo testing for security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than a fully operational satellite program. The project aims to gather orbit-based interference data affecting satellite navigation signals, with the results informing Austria’s Defence Ministry as it develops its military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT integrates into Austria’s expanding space strategy
The Austrian Defence Ministry is creating a dedicated unit tasked with space services, covering satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is a key part of this emerging structure, focusing specifically on navigation signal interference. The ministry’s military space strategy envisions an evolution from merely utilizing space services to operating space infrastructure and systems directly. Austria adopted this strategy in 2023, with implementation plans extending into 2035 and beyond.
Scheduled for launch in February 2027, the mission will utilize a Falcon 9 to deploy the satellite into orbit. Once in space, BEACONSAT will collect and analyze data on GNSS interference as part of its research activities. The collaboration involves Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technology providers. This mission will mark Austria’s first military satellite, testing domestically developed systems to monitor disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation signals.
