This July milestone followed a June characterized by widespread and prolonged extreme heat. According to GeoSphere Austria, 157 out of 277 weather stations monitored recorded new maximum temperatures for June. Additionally, 66 stations documented their highest temperature ever for any month. On June 28, Vienna reached 40.0 degrees, and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg hit 40.1 degrees on the following day. Multiple low-altitude areas experienced 10 to 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.
The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimated that the combined socioeconomic losses from the June and late July heatwaves totaled approximately €1.4 billion. This preliminary estimate accounts for health impacts, lost productivity, agricultural damage, infrastructure strain, and increased cooling demands. It also considers effects on ecosystems and public services. However, it does not constitute a final government assessment or an insured-loss total, as insurance data only reflect damage covered by active policies.
Extent of heatwave surpasses previous Austrian records
To gauge the severity of the heat events, researchers used area-degree days, a metric combining temperature intensity, duration, and geographic coverage. The June heatwave was estimated at around 16,700 area-degree days, while the late July event ranged from 22,700 to 25,000. Austria’s prior record was set during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which registered approximately 22,100 area-degree days over land below 1,500 meters in elevation.
The extreme temperatures also correlated with a notable rise in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported an estimated 395 deaths in June 2026 attributable to heat, marking the highest June total since tracking began. Heat-related mortality reflects deaths exceeding the expected number during periods of intense heat, without the need for heat to be the direct cause listed on death certificates.
Prolonged drought intensifies Austria’s water crisis
Following months of unusually dry weather, Austria experienced the heatwave amid a significant lack of rainfall. From January 1 to July 27, the country received roughly 426 millimeters of precipitation, well below the long-term average of 609 millimeters for the same period—a deficit of nearly 30%. Authorities described the first seven months of 2026 as the driest comparable period since at least the early 1900s, with Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland recording some of the largest rainfall shortages.
Persistent high-pressure systems, abundant sunshine, and minimal precipitation increased evaporation rates during late spring and summer, leading to reduced soil moisture and added stress on crops, rivers, forests, and water reserves. Climate records indicate that Austria has seen more frequent, longer, and hotter heatwaves over recent decades, with average maximum temperatures during such events rising by about three degrees between the 1980s and the 2020s. The newly set July record adds another significant indicator of Austria’s ongoing trend toward more extreme heat conditions.
