LONDON / RankWire.AI / – Britain is bolstering its defenses against emerging AI threats after experiments uncovered over 1,300 cyber vulnerabilities. These flaws were found across hundreds of government software repositories. The UK government has announced that its initiative will leverage cutting-edge AI tools to improve cybersecurity and pinpoint weaknesses in vital digital infrastructure. Authorities are also developing protocols to handle serious incidents involving autonomous AI systems. This effort is part of a broader strategy to enhance national resilience amid the deployment of more advanced AI models for public use.

Britain expands AI security after government cyber trials
Britain expands AI security measures across government systems and critical services.

In two government-led pilots, a total of 1,352 security flaws were identified and remediated across 548 code repositories within 18 departments. These tests explored how advanced AI could assist in detecting software vulnerabilities and identifying potential cyber threats. Moving forward, officials plan to expand the frontier AI hardening initiative to other parts of the government, prioritizing systems with the highest risk levels. The programme also aims to develop the government’s overall capacity to utilize AI in cyber defense while maintaining oversight of these technologies.

The Artificial Intelligence Minister Kanishka Narayan revealed that Britain’s AI Security Institute is actively assessing new models and testing the robustness of their protective measures. He stated that the institute employs more than 100 technical experts working on model evaluation and security. Their current focus includes testing Gemini 4 Argon and other sophisticated systems. The government emphasizes that independent testing remains essential because public authorities cannot solely depend on AI developers to evaluate risks posed by increasingly advanced models.

Expansion of AI incident response planning

The National Cyber Security Centre is collaborating with government agencies and the AI Security Institute to establish procedures for handling major incidents involving agentic AI. These autonomous systems can perform complex tasks with minimal human oversight. The proposed framework will assist authorities in incident detection, risk containment, and providing support to those affected. Additionally, officials are evaluating how existing cyber response infrastructures can be adapted to address failures involving autonomous AI and advanced technologies in critical sectors.

Furthermore, the government is exploring amendments to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill currently progressing through Parliament. Proposed changes include enhanced regulation of AI-related cyber risks, serious incidents, near misses, and loss-of-control events. The existing rules already mandate certain operators and digital service providers to report significant cyber incidents, requiring initial notifications within 24 hours and comprehensive reports within 72 hours. This security framework encompasses vital services such as hospitals, energy grids, and drinking-water systems.

    UK enhances AI safety protocols

Narayan emphasized that the UK must combine strengthened cyber defenses with independent verification and domestic technical expertise. He also indicated that legislation might be necessary where current safeguards fall short against new risks. The government has started developing support mechanisms for AI verification and plans to release additional information in the coming months. These verification tools are designed to verify whether advanced systems operate as intended and to ensure that safety controls remain effective under demanding circumstances.

These initiatives are part of a broader governmental programme examining the security and public service implications of artificial intelligence. The Prime Minister’s AI Taskforce is assessing issues related to economic growth, public services, employment, and security. Additionally, Britain has identified AI as a key policy focus for its upcoming 2027 G20 presidency. The latest cybersecurity initiatives concentrate on testing advanced AI models, patching software vulnerabilities, and preparing government systems for significant AI-related emergencies.
