An international team of climate scientists found that record-breaking heat is the dominant factor behind these phenomena, surpassing the influence of seasonal rainfall deficits. European countries have seen river levels drop to critical lows, water use restrictions tighten, and wildfires spread rapidly following the unprecedented heatwave in June. The data underscores that a warming global climate significantly accelerates moisture evaporation from land and water sources, producing an environment that is increasingly dry and unstable. The study published by the World Weather Attribution group details how rising temperatures directly contribute to depleting natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is not primarily caused by a lack of rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere that creates larger moisture deficits on land. This means that even in areas where rainfall remains relatively steady, the risk of drought continues to grow.
